新概念英語第三冊有這樣一句話： Children always appreciate small gifts of money 。書中的漢語翻譯是：孩子們總是喜歡得到一些零花錢 。我總覺得這樣含糊的翻譯使學生不能很好的掌握appreciate的含義 。在這句話里 ， appreciate 的意思是“能夠認識到、體會到某物或某人的價值” 。譬如 ， 有些有價值的東西一開始可能沒有人認識它們的價值：At that time, nobody appreciated the value of the stone. (當時沒有人認識這個石頭的價值 。) 有些人學富五車 ， 才高八斗 ， 可就是沒有人重用他 。于是就只能仰天長嘯：Nobody appreciates my talent. (天下無人識我??！) 。如今我們說某某人是伯樂 。我們意思是說：He is good at appreciating people’s talents. （他擅長發現人才） 。其他例子還有： To get a full appreciation of what this means, we must turn first to some recent human inventions. 為了充分認識其意義 ， 我們必須首先回顧一下最近的人類發明 。She shows little or no appreciation of good music. 這句話的意思是即使把好音樂放給她聽她也不知道好在哪里 。He is the first one who appreciated the enormous potential of internet in business. 他是能認識到互聯網商業價值的第一人 。You can't fully appreciate foreign literature in translation. (dictionary example)看翻譯作品很難體會到外國文學的韻味 。當然appreciate 還有感謝的意思： Your early reply will be appreciated 。如能盡早作復 ， 本人不勝感激 。Please accept this gift in appreciation of all you've done for us. appreciate表示“增值”的意思也一定要學會哦： Antique paintings will appreciate with time. 古董畫會隨時間增值 。depreciate就是“貶值、折舊”的意思： Shares in the company have depreciated. 該公司的股票已經貶值 。
