咱們北方話把“閑聊”稱作“嘮嗑”，chew the fat是個俗語，和“嘮嗑”的意思很相近 。不過，也有人對此產生異議：chew the fat明明是“細嚼肥肉”，似乎和“聊天、嘮嗑”八桿子打不著！呵呵，尋答案還得細查辭源 。

另外，chew（咀嚼）在英語中常用來比喻“沉思，抱怨，閑談”等一些行為，如短語chew the cud（深思）；chew the rag（聊天，爭論，發牢騷） 。
